Grace Ida Matero, the daughter of the late Jacob and Ida (Hiltunen) Matero, was born on May 2, 1913, in Spruce Valley Township of Marshall county, near Middle River, Minnesota. She attended school and grew to womanhood in the Middle River community and was baptized and confirmed in the Finnish Lutheran Church at Middle River. She lived and farmed with her brother, Art, in Spruce Valley Township most of her life, except for a year spend employed as a domestic in Minneapolis in 1941. She was also employed at the boarding home in Middle River for several years.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church of Middle River and was a charter member of the Spruce Valley Garden Club. In 1983, Grace moved to the Royal Manor Apartments in Middle River and in 2008, moved to Life Care Greenbush Manor Nursing Home in Greenbush where she passed away on Wednesday evening, May 26, 2010, at the age of 97 years and 24 days.
She is survived by two sisters-in-law: Alice Matero, of Middle River, and Virginia Matero, of Aurora, CO; in addition to several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Grace was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers: Raymond, Elmer, Arvid and Arthur and three sisters: Gertrude, Elvira, and one in infancy.
