Donald Lokken, 82, died on Thursday, June 23, 2011 at his daughter’s home in Spooner, WI.
Funeral services will be 10:30 AM, Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at Zion Lutheran Church, Thief River Falls, MN with Rev. Ale Tulu and Rev. John Golv officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, Newfolden, MN.
Visitation will be from 5-8 PM, Monday, June 27, 2011 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN with a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to the funeral service at the church on Tuesday.
Donald Worth Lokken was born on August 16, 1928 to Albert M. and Jenny Olivia (Ordal) Lokken in Newfolden, MN. He was baptized and confirmed on November 15, 1942 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Newfolden. He attended school in Newfolden, graduating in 1946.
Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the US Navy, serving his country from 1946 to 1948. He then worked for the Corp of Engineers for a couple of years. In 1951, Donald began working as a surveyor for the Minnesota Department of Transportation in Thief River Falls. He worked for them for 39 years retiring in 1990.
Donald was united in marriage to Clarus June Mickelson on March 8, 1958 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Newfolden, MN. Shortly after marriage they settled down in a home just outside of Thief River Falls.
Don had a love of nature and wildlife and spent countless hours going for drives traveling the backroads and exploring the country with the love of his life June. They were able to visit nearly every state together including Alaska and Hawaii, and several trips through Canada. Donald always looked forward to hunting trips with his friends, especially the annual week of deer hunting in November. He was an avid Minnesota Vikings fan. Don also known as “Sonny” among family, also enjoyed playing cards, especially pinochle with family and friends. His luck and skill made us want to be his partner to increase our chances of winning. Donald was known as our “MacGyver” and he was known to be able to fix or repair anything with his creativity, resourcefulness, and patience. He enjoyed woodworking and carved and painted several beautiful birds and “wooden” chains, refinished several pieces of furniture and made frames for countless family heirlooms. His other hobbies included bird watching, looking for nature’s treasures, and wine making. He was also an extremely avid reader, having read thousands of books and novels in his spare time. He was a very proud grandfather to seven grandchildren.
Donald and Clarus moved to live with their daughter in Eden Prairie for about 5 years and then in Spooner, WI since.
He is survived by two children, Dean Lokken and fiancé, Deb Olson of Baxter, MN and Karla Lokken and fiancé, Rich McCarthy of Spooner, WI; seven grandchildren: Mitchell and Trenton Purdy of Eden Prairie, MN, Devin Lokken of Baxter, MN; Damon Snider, Dylan, Dalton and Abby McCarthy of Spooner. WI; one brother Leroy (Delores) Lokken, Salinas, CA, brother in law Bob Sandal, Al _____ and sister in law Gloria Larson.
He was preceded in death by his wife Clarus June Lokken on February 28, 2007, two sisters, Carmen, and Janice Sandahl.
