Donald Larson, 89 of Holt, MN passed away on Saturday, December 5, 2015 at Valley Home in Thief River Falls, MN.
Funeral service will be held on Monday, December 14, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Holt, MN with Reverend Cathie Rhodes Officiating. Burial will be held at the Holt Cemetery following the service.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 13, 2015 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN, from 3 – 6 PM with a prayer service at 5:00 PM and also one hour prior to the service on Monday at Nazareth Lutheran Church.
Donald Lester Larson was born on September 23, 1926, to Ole and Matilda (Furr) Larson at the family homestead in Mud Lake Township, Minnesota, now known as the Lake Agassiz Wildlife Refuge. He was baptized and confirmed at the Nazareth Lutheran Church in Holt, Minnesota. He attended the Sunny Side School, Holt School, and Graduated from the Crookston Agricultural School in 1943. When he was ten his parents moved a school house to Holt Township where Don continued to live all the days of his life.
Don farmed small grains and raised sheep and cattle. He also operated a heavy equipment construction business and enjoyed his time working with his tractors, bulldozers, and draglines. Later in life he enjoyed much of his time flying his airplane, making hunting and fishing trips to Alaska, and watching and hunting the deer in Minnesota. He spent many winters enjoying the sun in Florida. In addition, he enjoyed his garden and raising pumpkins in his large pumpkin patch and delivering those to senior homes throughout the community. Don enjoyed listening to old time music and going to dances. He was a member of the Eagles Club for 69 years in Thief River Falls, MN. Don was a member of the Holt Nazareth Lutheran Church and a willing supporter of the efforts to build the new Church there.
On August 9, 1950, he was united in marriage to JoAnn M. Benitt. Together they raised four children. He is survived by his children: Gloriann Fischer, Baudette, Minnesota, Danny (Kim) Larson, Anchorage, Alaska, Stacy (Bernard) Blawat, Thief River Falls, Minnesota and Stephany Wilkens, Baxter, Minnesota. His seven grandchildren: Jake Larson, Las Vegas, Nevada, Meg Larson, Denver, Colorado, Mitchell (Kendra) Martin, Thief River Falls, Minnesota, Anthony Martin, Newfolden, Minnesota, Rachel Blawat, Thief River Falls, Minnesota, Katherine Wilkens, Baxter, Minnesota, Amanda Wilkens, Florence, Oregon, several nieces, nephews and cousins and his close companion of many years, Delores Rudy, Thief River Falls, Minnesota, who was with him to the end.
Don is preceded in death by his parents and brothers Martin, Lloyd, Clifford, his sister Dolores Benitt and son-in-law Doyle Martin.
