Kilen, Donald Morlen (1940-2010)

Donald Morlen Kilen, the son of the late Alfred and Myrtle (Johnson) Kilen, was born on February 16, 1940, at Greenbush, MN. He attended school and grew to manhood in Whiteford Township of Marshall Co., near Middle River, and was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church of Thief Lake near his home. In August of 1957, Donnie was united in marriage to Shirley Maras at Hibbing, MN., and to this union five children were born: Kim, Donnie, Sherry, Billie and Kelly. In 1971, he married Margie Greenwaldt and Kevin was born to this marriage. Donnie worked construction at Hibbing, the Twin Cities and locally. He retired in 1998 and returned to the Middle River community where he has since resided. He was a member of the Local 49ers for many years and also of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church where he served as council deacon. Donnie has been in failing health for the past year and passed away at his home east of Middle River on Saturday evening, February 6, 2010, at the age of 69 years, 11 months and 20 days.

He is survived by two sons: Donnie (Cindy Campbell) and Kevin, both of Middle River; two daughters: Kim (Rick) Zbacnik, of Chisholm, MN. And Sherry (David) Torgerson, of Hibbing; four step-children: Roger Childs, of Plymouth, MN.; Pam (Donnie) Thompson, of Crystal, MN.; Sherry Balsam, of Champlin, MN.; and Sheryl Thorton, of the Twin Cities; 22 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers: Wayne (Shirley), of Newfolden, MN. and Joe, of Two Harbors, MN.; three sisters: Marilyn Shalloe, of Hibbing; Connie (Gene) Folden, of Williams, MN.; and Edith Zahn of Newfolden; sister-in-law: Sharon Kilen, of Middle River; in addition to many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Donnie was preceded in death by his parents; his step-parents: Gerald and Corrine Lanigan; two sons: Billie and Kelly; one great-granddaughter: Destiny; and one brother: Roger.
