July 12, 1950 Warren Sheaf reports: Nels Berg, 86, Pioneer Viking Resident Dies
Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon July 3 at 1 PM at the Zion Lutheran Church of Viking for Nels Berg, one of Marshall County’s pioneer residents. Nels Berg was born in Helsingland, Sweden in February 22, 1864 where he spent his childhood.
He immigrated to the United States when a young man coming to Watertown first, later to the vicinity of Minneapolis. On April 22, 1889 he was united in marriage to Sofia Johnson of Minneapolis who preceded him in death on April 7, 1917. Shortly after his marriage he came to Marshall County to farm west of Warren. In 1897 he moved to Viking and settled on a homestead where he spent the rest of his life.
He passed away on June 29 at the age of 86 years, 4 months and 7 days following a long illness. Surviving are his ten children, Edith Olson, Hannah Anderson, George, Gustaf, Edward of Viking, Edna and Esther of Warren, Carl Berg of Faribault, Mrs. Signe Knutson of Bucoda, WA and Mrs. Minnie Kvasager of Idaho Falls, ID, 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchilden, two brothers and one sister in Sweden.
In the Census taken June 12, 1900, Nels was 36 years of age, Sophia was 31. They had been married 11 years and had 8 children and 8 were living. Nels had been in the United States for 17 years and Sophia for 14 years.
