Wittman, Laurel E., Sr. (1926-2012)

Laurel Wittman Sr., 85, of Warren, MN, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Friday morning, March 30, 2012 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND with his family by his side after a courageous battle with kidney disease.

He was born December 12, 1926, in McCrea Township, MN. He attended Burnside School in McCrea Township where he completed the 8th grade.

On March 22, 1952, Laurel married Beverly Ekwall in Goodridge, MN. They made their home in rural Warren where they farmed and raised seven children. Laurel loved animals and always envisioned himself farming. Early in life he was involved in 4-H cattle projects and won Grand Champion Beef in 1938. He farmed in partnership with his father John until 1958. Laurel continued to farm until rheumatoid arthritis forced his retirement in 1980. In addition to farming, he was a welder at Artic Cat.

Laurel was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and gun collecting. He was an inventor, whether it was gardening, photography, or leather work, he was a master of the materials at hand. Laurel was a lifetime learner and continuously read almanacs and encyclopedias. Laurel also loved visiting at the coffee shop and conversations with family and friends over a game of cards.

Left to mourn his passing are seven children, Laurel Jr. (Sonja) Wittman of Camano Island, WA, Sharon (Pastor Craig) Haberman of Tracy, MN, Sheryl Northup of Thief River Falls, MN, Larry Wittman of Badger, MN, Jon (Inna) Wittman of Goleta, CA, Carol (Greg) Kilen of Warren, MN and Pamela (Jason) McDonald of Allen, TX; twenty-two grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Marlene (Sig) Silnes of Warren, MN and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Beverly.
