Mary Patricia Allen, age 98, of Warren, Minnesota, passed away at her home on Monday, November 30, 2015.
Mary was born September 19, 1917 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Emma F. (Smith) and Bernard J. Geraghty. She attended high school in Minneapolis, Miss Woods School/Macalester College (class of 1940), graduated from the University of Minnesota, and later did graduate work at the University of North Dakota. She taught school in Minneapolis, Grove City, Milaca, Stephen, and Warren.
She married V. Lloyd Allen, of Radium, MN on December 30, 1947 and moved to Radium. They later moved to Warren and owned the Gamble store before she returned to teaching. She was a proud member of the Grace United Methodist Church, and was happy teaching Sunday School and vacation bible school. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and enjoyed talking with fellow teachers, even after retirement.
She loved teaching school and believed she never met a child she couldn’t teach to read. She delighted in putting on programs at church and school, especially at Christmas. Even in these last years she would talk about all of the fun she had teaching, building “silver city” with the kids, and seemed to never forget any of her students In her dreams she still talked with her students and put on programs, sang songs and knew which child had which part. Being a teacher was never a job to her, it was just who she was. So often she didn’t pick up her check or lost it in her desk; it didn’t matter, what mattered was how her kids were doing.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd, in 1996; her parents; and her brothers, Robert Geraghty and Bernard Geraghty, Jr.
She is survived by her children, Susan (Allen) Anderson and Tim (Pat) Allen; grandchildren, Kristin (Dan) Hernandez and Karl Anderson; and great-granddaughter Anna Hernandez. She is also survived by her nieces, Kathleen (Steve) Bizzarri, and Martha (Bernie Galgoci) Peterson; and her nephews, Dennis (Jan) Geraghty, Daniel Geraghty, John (Kathleen) Holden, Kent (Heloisa) Holden, Barry (Kristy) Holden, Craig (Dorothea Hrossowyc) Holden, and Dick (Jane) Peterson. She is also survived by her devoted companion, Kittykin.
In lieu of memorials, Mary would have loved for everyone to have some fun with a child, read a story or sing a song! Thank you to the City of Warren for letting her live her dream.
At the request of the family, no services will be held.
