Mary Eliza Sampson was born January 12, 1921 in Adger Township, Marshall County MN, the daughter of Martin and Ingeberg (Brokke) Sampson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Christian Faith and attended school at Busy Bee Elementary School near Holt, MN.
On October 19, 1940, Mary was united in marriage to George Nick Baker. The couple lived in Pontiac, MI for 3 years and then moved to the farm in Silverton Township where they raised their family. They made their living by raising small grain, cattle, milking cows and operating a heavy equipment business. She worked hard on the farm, while raising their children. She also worked at the Battleson’s Mink Farm and worked at Joppru’s Meats for 14 years. When George died in 1977, Mary continued living on the farm until 1983. She moved to Goodridge and lived there until 1997. She then moved into Thief River Falls, where she has resided since.
Mary always had an open house for her grandchildren. She always served them Hi-C Juice and Chicken in the Biscuit Crackers. Mary was a member of Silver Creek Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aide. She was especially great at recycling cards and was a typical good homemaker. She liked to crochet and had a great sense of humor.
She is survived by a son, George (Tess) Baker Jr., Indianapolis, IN and a daughter, Louise Cullen, Waskish, MN; 19 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren and a great-great grandson.
