Brekkestran, Earl L. (1935-2009)

Earl L. Brekkestran was born February 2, 1935 in Warren, MN. to Leonard and Evelyn (Haugen) Brekkestran.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at United Lutheran church in Gatzke. Earl attended district 82 North country school in rural Gatzke and later attended high school in Middle River. Earl enlisted in the Army in February 20, 1953 and served in the Eniwetok Islands in “Operation Castle”. He was honorably discharged on November 16, 1955 and returned to Gatzke where he made his home and took over his father’s job as a county road grader for a number of years. He later went on to work in road construction for many years until his retirement.

Earl moved into Middle River in 1990 where he has since made his home before entering the Thief River Falls Care Center in June due to failing health. He moved into the Karlstad Health Care Center in Karlstad on July 16th where he passed away on Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at the age of 74 years, 5 months, and 26 days.

Earl was a lifetime member of United Lutheran church in Gatzke, a devoted member of both the American Legion Post 444 in Middle River and the Thief River Falls V.F.W. Post 2793. He was also a member of the Local 49’ers Operating Engineers Union. Earl was an avid historian, enjoyed music, reading, playing the guitar, working crossword puzzles, and enjoyed all of his many friends from the Legion and the Wheel.

Earl is survived by his daughter Bonita (Tim) Wayne of Dilworth, MN, 5 brothers Melroy and Wendell (Dora) both of Thief River Falls, Galen (Sharon) of Gaylord, MI, Arvin of Middle River and Dwight (Patty) of Brooks. 4 sisters: Erma (Larry) Dahl of Middle River, Arlette (Laurel) Mejer of Greenbush, Bonnie (Ron) Ward of Gatzke, and Lynelle Talmage of Thief River Falls. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters: Marlys Brekkestran and Janet Olson, and 2 nieces.
