Melroy Omar Brekkestran was born on January 23, 1933 in Warren, MN to Leonard and Evelyn (Haugen) Brekkestran. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at United Lutheran Church in Gatzkeand attended school at District 82 North of rural Gatzke. Following school he worked for a number of area farmers in the Gatzke community until enlisting in the Army in Feb 1951. Melroy served in Korea for a year as a Combat Engineer. Melroy was honorably discharged In Feb 1954 as a Sargent earning the Good Conduct medal and the UN Defense medal. Following his discharge he moved back to Marshall County and was united in marriage to Margie Thomas in 1955 and the two then made their home in Minneapolis where he worked construction and also for Tasty Bread. Melroy later married Janet Wehran and they made their home in Blaine where he continued to work for Tasty Bread until his retirement. Melroy then moved back to the Middle River community where he resided until moving to the Greenleaf Senior Living Center in Thief River Falls in 2006 where he passed away on Monday, September 8, 2014 at the age of 81 years, 7 months, and 16 days.
Melroy was a member of United Lutheran Church in Gatzke, Middle RiverAmerican Legion, and V.F.W of Blaine, MN. He loved to Polka dance, enjoyed watching sports, westerns, and old war movies. He was anavid hunter and fisherman and introduced and instilled in his boys his love of hunting.
He is survived by his 9 sons: Melroy Jr. of Onamia, MN, Steven (Judy) of Northfield, MN, Jeff (Rhonda) of Blaine, MN, David (Linda) of Pine River, MN, Russell (Sue) of Onamia, MN, James (Tammy) of Shoreview, Kevin (Vickie) of Coon Rapids, MN, David (Alex) of Ocean Side, CA, Mike (Jamie) of Warroad, MN; 4 brothers Wendell (Dora) of Thief River Falls, MN, Galen (Sharon) of Gaylord, MI, Arvin of Thief River Falls, MN, and Dwight (Patty) of Brooks, MN.; 4 sisters Erma (Larry) Dahl of Middle River, MN, Arlette (Laurel) Majer of Strathcona, MN, Bonnie (Ron) Ward of Gatzke, MN, and Lynnell Talmage of Thief River Falls, MN.; along with numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Melroy was proceeded in death by his parents, 1 brother Earl, 2 sisters Marlys Brekkestran and Janet Olson, and 1 great granddaughter.
