James Engelsrud, Newfolden, MN age 76 died on Saturday, November 30, 2013 in the same house, the same room he was born in, on the Engelsrud Family Farm, with his loving family at his side.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, December 6, 2013 at Bethania Free Lutheran Church, rural Newfolden, MN with Rev. Dennis Gray officiating. Burial will follow at Bethania Church Cemetery.
James Allen Engelsrud was born on July 2, 1937 at home on the Engelsrud Family Farm in Marsh Grove Township, Marshall County, MN the son of Conrad H. and Anna (Haugen) Engelsrud. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith at the home of Hjalmer and Elizabeth Haugen and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Newfolden, MN. He attended the George Lee Country School in Marsh Grove Township and graduated from Newfolden High School in 1955.
Jim stayed home to work on the family farm along with his dad, Conrad and his uncle, Henry. In 1960 he attended Bemidji State College where he studied physical education and coaching. Then when spring came, all Jim thought about was getting back on the tractor and returned home to farm.
On February 28, 1970 Jim was united in marriage to Leola Rae Chapman at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, MN. The couple lived in Newfolden until October and then moved to the Engelsrud Family Farm where they have continued to reside. To this union five children were born, Jay, Lori, Jon, Sarah and Kevin.
Jim was a member of the Bethania Free Lutheran Church in rural Newfolden and also served on the Bethania Cemetery Board. He enjoyed reading, hunting, fishing, listening to old-time music, following his kids in their sports and activities, and he also followed the Minnesota Twins, Northstar’s, Vikings, Timberwolves and Wild. While in high school Jim excelled in football and track, and in 2009 was inducted into the Nordic Hall of Fame along with the rest of the 1954-55 football team.
To those who knew him, Jim was a kind, patient, caring, fun-loving, hard-working and gentle man who thoroughly enjoyed his family and the grandchildren.
Survivors include his loving wife of 43 years, Leola; children, Jay Engelsrud, Lori Colling, Sarah Lefebvre and Kevin Engelsrud; six grandchildren; sisters, Verna Elseth and LuAnn Broderson; mother-in-law, Darleen Chapman; brother-in-law, DeVere Chapman; sister-in-law, DeAnna Anderson; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Jon; brothers, Harlan in WWII and LeRoy in infancy; sister, Avis (Howard) Hoium; and father-in-law, Raymond Chapman.
