Fern Gilbert, 95 and longtime resident of Warren MN, passed away in Richland, WA on December 10, 2012.
Fern was born on July 4, 1917 in Strandquist, MN to Aggie Marie and Peter George Hougard. She graduated from high school in Strandquist, MN and earned her teaching certificate at Moorhead State College. Fern taught elementary school in Newfolden, MN prior to her June 15, 1941 marriage to Percy Arthur Gilbert. She continued teaching while he was in the service during World War II. Following the war they lived in Stephen, MN. They moved to Warren, MN in 1948 where they continued raising their family. Fern taught in Warren, earned her Bachelor of Education degree from the University of North Dakota and retired following 29 years of dedicated service.
Fern was blessed with good health and was able to spend 27 winters in Mesa, AZ playing golf, bridge, and enjoying family and friends.
Fern was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, a Worthy Matron in the Order of the Eastern Star, Delta Kappa Gamma, Women’s Club, Mother’s Club, Minnesota Education Association and a women’s champion golfer at Warren Riverside Golf Club.
Fern was preceded in death by her husband, parents and a brother and sister.
Fern is survived by sons Bill (Michelle) of Richland, WA, Pete (Wendy) of Goodyear, AZ and a daughter Pat Carlson of Moberly, MO, a sister Lorna of Crookston, MN and a sister-in-law Etta Mae of Albany, NY, eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
