Grega, Mae Irene (Engelstad) (1925-2008)

Mae Grega, 83, of Warren, MN, passed away on Wednesday evening, Aug. 13, 2008 at the Good Samaritan Center in Warren, MN.

Mae Irene Engelstad was born April 26, 1925 in Warren, the daughter of Benard O. and Carrie (Sahlberg) Engelstad. She attended and graduated from Warren High School. On Oct. 26, 1945, she married John Grega. They made their home in rural Warren where they farmed and raised six children. Mae worked at Toupin’s Chalet for several years. John died on April 30, 1999. After John died, Mae moved into Warren.

She was an active member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church where she was a Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher, Luther League advisor, leader of Lutheran Daughters and participated with the OSL Quilters and OSL Circle. Mae was also a member of Hospital and Home Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, Angus Homemakers and Warren PTA. She was a volunteer for Red River Valley Hospice.

Mae had many hobbies including sewing, doing many types of needlework, gardening, baking, canning and watching Nascar and hockey.

Left to mourn her passing are six children: Janice (Skip) Berndt of Victorville, CA, Merlin “John” (MaryEllen) Grega of Black Hawk, SD, Marlyce (Ron) Thompson of Ortonville, MN, Joan (Gary) Peterson of Warren, MN, Marcia (David) Meine of Crookston, MN, and Jane Grega of Grand Forks, ND, twelve grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, two brothers, Leland (Janice) Engelstad of Biwabik, MN and Conrad “Bud” Engelstad of Hibbing, MN, three sisters-in-law, Diane Engelstad of Pinon Hills, CA, Ardell Engelstad of McKinley, MN and Helen (Walter) Lutnes of Fertile, MN and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, stepmother (Pearl), husband, five brothers, William (Pete), Charles, Selmer, Russell and Delberne, six sisters-in-law, June Engelstad, Donna Engelstad, Pat Engelstad, Millie Grega, Mary Torgerson and Anna Grega, brother-in-law, Andy Grega and several nieces and nephews.
