Hagen, Delmar (1910-1988)

Delmar Hagen died September 2, 1988 at his home in Rollis Township, Marshall County, MN at the age of 78 years, 5 months and 19 days. May his memory be blessed.

Funeral services were held Monday, September 5, 1988 at 2:00 P.M. at the United Lutheran Church in Gatzke, MN with Rev. Robert Amundson, officiant. Interment was at the Moose River Cemetery, Gatzke, MN.

Melanie Lunsetter served at organist and Mary Ann Lunsetter was the soloist. The family considered all of Delmar’s friends in attendance as Honorary Casketbearers. Casketbearers were Doug Axtell, Sue Stigen Axtell, Sue Melby, Kathy Munro, Tim Panek, Deb Sigerud, Lance Stoddard and Linda Wennberg.

Delmar Hagen was born on March 13, 1910 at Greenbush, Minnesota to the late Dick and Frances (Bergum) Hagen. The family moved to the Lake Agassiz area when he was a young child and he attended rural schools there.

Delmar spent several years working in Montana prior to his marriage to Eunice Johnson on December 28, 1936 at Holt, Minnesota. After their marriage they began farming in Rollis Township, Marshall County, MN.

Delmar was a very active community leader. He had served the Gatzke School board for 23 years, the Roseau Electric Coop board for 36 years, the Minnkota Power Coop Board for 25 years, and on the Red Lake Water Shed Board for 22 years. The board recently dedicated the Moose River Control Dam in his honor. He was a founder of the American State Bank of Grygla, a member of the United Lutheran Church and the Grygla Lions Club.

In appreciation for nursing care Delmar established the Sue Stigen Scholarship fund at the Northwest Medical Center. He was a member of the U of M 1000 Club. He will also be remembered for his historic ox cart trek following the Pembina trail from Pembina, North Dakota to St. Paul during the State Centennial in 1958.

He is survived by his wife, Eunice; one son, Larry and wife, Ila of Gatzke, MN; two daughters: Harlene (Mrs. Don) Overgaard of Roseville, MN and Penny (Mrs. Eldon) Johnson of Eagan, MN; 8 grandchildren; two brothers: Maurice Hagen of Carson, CA and Orrin of Santa Maria, CA; three sisters: Ethel Folda of Lewistown, MT, Alice Knutson of Aurora, MN and Grace (Mrs. Peter) Seilstad of Denton, MT.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter, Lana Johnson; two brothers, Lester and Ralph; and two sisters, Marion and Glenda.
