Harry C. Howard, 91, of Warren, MN, passed away on Friday, August 3, 2012 at the North Valley Health Center in Warren.
Harry Clayton Howard was born on June 13, 1921 in Warren, the son of Thomas and Olga (Stone) Howard. He was a life long resident of Warren. Harry attended country school in Boxville and graduated from Warren High School. He went to Concordia College in Moorhead, MN for two years and then volunteered for the Naval Air Corp during WWII. Harry served in the military from 1942 -1946. He married Muriel Furan on March 15, 1943 in Slayton, MN. Harry and Muriel lived in Corpus Christi, TX where he was a flight instructor. After his discharge, Harry and Muriel returned to Warren where he farmed. Harry joined his brother, Art, going down south to Texas and combining their way back to Minnesota. They continued this for 30 years. Harry and Art also owned the local Massey Harris dealership for many years until Massey Harris made it a company store. Muriel died on July 23 1992. Harry retired from farming in 1998.
He was active in several agriculture organizations including the Minnesota Wheat Growers and The National Wheat Growers Association. Harry traveled to Geneva, Switzerland in 1979 and 1980 on behalf of the wheat growers. He was president of the National Association of Wheat Growers Foundation for 3 A½ years and made several trips to Washington D.C. on behalf of wheat growers.
Harry was the youngest Mayor of Warren at the age of 29. He was also a 66 year member of Warren American Legion Post #27, past member and president of the Warren Jaycees and a member and former board member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.
Left to mourn his passing are five children, Tom (Fern) Howard of Scottsdale, AZ, Pam (Don) Slusar of Coon Rapids, MN, Stephanie (Jim) Roufs of Grand Forks, ND, Tim (Bonnie) Howard of Warren, MN and Tony (Peggy) Howard of Shakopee, MN; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Olga; wife, Muriel; brother, Arthur and sister, Ruby Scheie.
Harry once wrote, I have been blessed with good kids, grandchildren and great-grandchildren… besides all the special friends made over the years. I am proud to be a native of Warren and a friend of all it’s fine people.
