Johnson, Dorothy Joan “Joan” (Fryer) (1916-2014)

Joan Johnson, 97, of Warren, MN, passed away on Thursday, January 30, 2014 at Riverview Hospital in Crookston, MN.

Dorothy Joan Fryer was born April 23, 1916 in Newport, Berkley, Gloucestershire, England, to Grantley and Kate Alice Fryer. She completed schooling as an elementary teacher in 1936. She taught in Miss Traehern’s Preparatory and Boarding School in England.

During WWII she met an American serviceman, Elmer Johnson, of Warren, MN. Following the war Joan traveled to the United States, and the two were married in Thief River Falls, MN on Dec 3, 1946. Joan received her American citizenship in June of 1948. Joan spent the years after marriage primarily as a homemaker and mother. She was very active in church and community activities. Eventually she took a position as an aide in the Warren Elementary School and enjoyed working with children.

Elmer and Joan lived in Fargo, ND from 1975 to 1995 where Joan was active in the First United Methodist Church, F.M. Music Club, and Fine Arts Club. Upon returning to Warren, Joan resumed her membership in Grace United Methodist Church, Hobby Homemakers, Mothers’ Club, and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Joan is survived by three children Joy (Richard) Lavik of Rugby, ND; Robin (LuAnn) Johnson of Warren, MN; and Beth Johnson of Eagan, MN. Four grandchildren Gillian Lavik (Tore Knudsen) of Cooperstown, NY; Tony (Lindsey) Johnson of Warren MN; Andrew (Kristen) Lavik of Fargo, ND; and Jessica (Adam) Joseph of La Crosse, WI. One brother, Bernard (Heather) Fryer, and a sister, Patricia Rollings in England.
