Johnson, Hjalmber (1885-1971)

Funeral services for Hjalmer Johnson, 86, of this city, were held today at 2 p.m. at Sinding’s Funeral chapel. Johnson was a resident of 305 South Arnold. He died Saturday at Northwestern hospital.

Rev. Harold Peterson, pastor at Trinity Lutheran church, officiated at the services. Mrs. Arnold Hammer served as organist and soloist. Interment was in Folden cemetery in Marshall county.

Pallbearers were Stanley Holmaas, Willard Holmas, Forest Johnson, Merle Johnson, Robert Johnson and Boyd Wilson.

Hjalmer Johnson was born Feb. 17, 1885 in Otter Tail county. At the age of four months, he moved with his parents to the Holt area. There he attended school and grew to manhood. On Oct. 15, 1911, he was married to Emma Stokke at Spooner. The couple lived in the Spooner-Haudette area until 1915 when they returned to the Holt community. Since 1947, they had made their home in this city.

While living in the Holt area, Johnson operated a sawmill, was engaged in farming, and worked as a carpenter. He was also engaged in carpenter work for a time after moving to this city.

He was a member of the Nazareth Lutheran church at Holt and since moving here had attended Trinity Lutheran church.

He is survived by his wife; one son, Francis Johnson of Newfolden; four daughters: Mrs. Ethel Hill of Duluth, Mrs. Delmar (Eunice) Hagen of Gatzke, and Mrs. Eloise Gilbert and Mrs. Duane (Yvonne) Green, both of Thief River Falls; 16 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Also one brother, David Johnson, of Seattle, Wash., and three sisters: Mrs. Karsten (Clara) Sagstuen, Mrs. Albert (Lillian) Johnson, both of Thief River Falls, and Mrs. Ruth Wilson of Newfolden.

One son, four brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.
