Funeral services for Wallace Mattson will be held at 10 A.M. Wed. at First Lutheran Church in Middle River with Pastor Curt Matz officiating. Visitation will be after 6 P.M. Tues. with a 7 P.M. prayer service at our Middle River chapel, and at the church one hour prior to services Wed. morning. Interment will be in Folden Cemetery near Newfolden with military honors accorded by the Middle River American Legion Post #444.
Wallace Orlin Mattson, the son of the late Matt and Johanna (Erickson) Mattson, was born on March 27, 1925, in Newfolden Twp. of Marshall Co., near Newfolden, MN. He was baptized and confirmed at the Evangelical Free Church there and graduated from Newfolden High School in 1943, He worked with his father for a couple of years prior to enlisting in the U.S. Army in Jan. of 1949. Following discharge from service, he returned to Newfolden and in 1954, formed a partnership with his older brother, Melvin, doing excavating work . He also worked as a heavy equipment operator in road construction for many years, and was with Schenkey Construction from 1971 until retirement in 1988. He, with his father and brother, Melvin, planted many birch and evergreen trees for people over a wide area of northern Minnesota over the years. Wally was a member of the Middle River American Legion Post #444 for 58 years. He enjoyed hunting and especially fishing with friends on Lake of the Woods. In June of 1988, he moved to the Royal Manor Apartments in Middle River. Since Feb. of 2010, he has resided at the Oakland Park Nursing Home in thief River Falls where he passed away on Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11, 2010, at the age of 85 years, 7 months and 14 days.
He is survived by one sister: Violet Tjosaas, of Granite Falls, MN.; in addition to many nieces and nephews.
Wally was preceded in death by his parents, one brother: Melvin, one sister: Evelyn, one sister-in-law: Avis, and two brothers-in-law: Hans and Walter Tjossas.
