Gunda Melgaard, 93, Warren, MN, passed away on Sunday, March 5, 2006 at the North Valley Health Center in Warren.
Gunda Marie Carlson was born on July 13, 1912 in Hallock, MN, the daughter of Axel and Marie Carlson. She was raised on a farm between Hallock and Lake Bronson. Her mother died when Gunda was 10 so she learned to cook and bake at a very young age. She was baptized and confirmed at the Swedish Lutheran Church. Gunda attended and graduated from high school in Lake Bronson. She worked as a housekeeper in Minneapolis, MN for two years before moving back to help on the farm. On November 28, 1932, she was united in marriage to Oscar Melgaard. They moved to Warren in 1933 when Oscar began work at the Peoples State Bank. They had three children; Barbara, Jerry and Russell. She was a member of the Eastern Star and Our Savior’s Lutheran Church where she was active in the Ladies Aid and Church Circle. Gunda was a terrific bread maker, cook, homemaker and mother. She enjoyed watching her “soap operas” and was a big fan of baseball. Gunda moved to the Good Samaritan Center on Dec. 8, 1994. Oscar died on Nov. 14, 1995.
Left to mourn her passing are two children; Russell Melgaard of Sioux Falls, SD and Barbara (David) Lindenberg of Mankato, MN, ten grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and son, Gerald, one sister and five brothers.
