Dolores Mesick, 85, died on Wednesday, May 18, 2010 at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, ND.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, May 22, 2010 at New Hope Lutheran Church in Newfolden, MN with Pastor Ollie Urdahl presiding. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Newfolden, MN.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM with a 6:00 PM prayer service on Friday, May 21, 2010 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN. Visitation will also be held from 1:00 PM until time of services on Saturday at the church.
Dolores Volborg (Bakke) Mesick was born July 1, 1924 to Arthur and Olga (Lind) Windahl in rural Newfolden, MN. She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith at Bethesda Lutheran Church in rural Newfolden where she was actively involved in Sunday School. As a child, Dolores attended Fairview Country School and graduated in 1942 from Newfolden High School. Following high school, Dolores ventured to Chicago where she worked for the US Treasury Department until 1944 and then moved to California and accepted a position with Lockheed Aircraft in Los Angeles. While living on the west coast, she sang for a time in a weekly gospel radio program and occasionally enjoyed singing in a night club.
On October 11, 1947 Dolores and Floyd Bakke were united in marriage and made their home in Newfolden. After retirement they spent the winters in Mesa, Arizona. Floyd passed away on May 18, 1992.
In 1947 Dolores moved back to the Newfolden area and attended the Area Vocational Technical College for Cosmetology in Thief River Falls as well as taking classes at Bemidji State College and UND in Grand Forks. After college Dolores owned her own beauty salon in Newfolden and taught cosmetology in Thief River Falls for 20 years.
On May 26, 1996 Dolores married Claude Mesick. Together they lived in Newfolden and spent time in Arizona during the winter months.
Dolores loved music. For over 50 years she sang at numerous weddings and funerals in the area. While she was in Arizona she belonged to a vocal group called the Universal Gospel Singers.
Some of her hobbies include oil painting, baking and entertaining. Dolores enjoyed helping others and sharing her talents. Some of her volunteer activities include driving for Social Services for several years, delivering Meals on Wheels, Bible study leader for the “New Hope Women of Life”, and helped with Vacation Bible School crafts and refreshments.
Among her many musical talents, Dolores had the opportunity to make two musical recordings in 1996, was the musical director for Sunday worship service in Arizona for many years, was part of the musical “Trio” which performed on radio broadcast and numerous community functions and in 1993-1994, received the Arizona Country Music Award for Top Gospel Vocalist of the Year.
Dolores was a charter member of Newfolden General Federation of Women’s Clubs, was past Chairman of the Newfolden “One Appeal” fund drive, volunteered for “Help the Children”, an organization in Arizona for needy children at Christmas, gave financial support to Sunshine Acres Children’s Home in Arizona and had the opportunity to take a week long missionary trip to Haiti in 1998.
Survivors include her husband, Claude of both Newfolden, MN and Mesa, AZ; sisters, June Barrow of Thief River Falls, MN, Phyllis (James) Gander of East Grand Forks, MN, Eloise Deihl of Dilworth, MN; brother, Norlan (Helen) Windahl of Deer River, MN; step-daughter, Vicki Bellon of Lansing, MI; step-son, Mike (Savea) Mesick of North Fon du Lac, WI; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and relatives; Special friends Marlene Broten, Kathryn Rokke and Pat Mjelde; several other friends and neighbors that looked after her and stopped for coffee as Dolores’ coffee pot was always on.
She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Floyd in 1992.
