James Harold Monroe was born on Aug. 18, 1922 in Radium, MN, the son of Fred and Anna (Schantzen) Monroe. He was Baptized and Confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He attended grade school in Radium and graduated from Warren High School in 1940 where he played football and was active in music. James worked for the Soo Line Railroad for 42 years with his first job as Depot Agent at Alvarado, MN. He served in the Army from 1944 – 1946 spending 18 months of active duty in Okinawa. He was Depot Agent in Alvarado for 21 years. James was united in marriage to Carol Nelson Johnson on June 23, 1956. They had four children, Nancy Jo, Jeffrey James, Bradley Jay and Brent Jason. They moved to the farm in Radium in 1969 where they built a new home. He was actively farming with his son, Jeff. Farming with his son was the highlight of his life. Presently, Jeff and his wife, Alise, live on the farm. In 2002, James and Carol moved to Warren.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Warren.
James enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time at their lake home on Lake Sarah with family.
Loving family members surviving Jim include his wife, Carol, three children; Nancy Monroe of Warren, MN, Jeff (Alise) Monroe of Radium, MN and Brent (Beth) Monroe of Thief River Falls, MN, two sisters; Esther Hill of Warren, MN and Ramona Monroe of Arvada, CO, grandchildren; Curtis Reitmeier, Kevin Reitmeier, Samuel David Gibson, Tad Tureson, Tim Tureson, Felecia (Andrew) Daly, McKenzie Berge and Jessica (Eric) Field and great-grandchildren, Mia and Carson Daly and Kayden and Gabriel Field and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Bradley Jay, sisters; Ozelle Aultman, Opal Aase, Ruby Larson, Loretta Rasmussen and Della Conley and brothers, Art Monroe, Clarence Monroe and George Monroe and numerous nieces and nephews.
James passed away on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.
