Verna Florence Holmstrom was born August 20, 1926 on the family farm in Wright Township near Strandquist, the daughter of Victor and Pearl (Swedberg) Holmstrom. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Verna attended country school through 8th grade at Oak Ridge, then continued to work on the family farm.
On November 27, 1946, Verna was united in marriage to Marshall Myhrer by Marshall’s father, Rev. Thorvald Myhrer. The couple made their home in the Newfolden area on the Marshall Myhrer family farm and raised their three boys – Keith, David, and Kelvin. After Marshall’s death in 1996 Verna continued to reside on their farm until the fall of 2010 when she moved to Valley Home.
Verna was the heart and soul of the small Myhrer farm, tending to the livestock, operating the tractor, and stacking hay. She was a longtime employee of Sethre’s Hartz store in Newfolden, where her personality shined. She also worked for Dawn and Joe Ose Farms and the Lokstad Rolling Pin Factory.
Verna’s biggest pleasure was working and helping other people. She enjoyed cleaning, painting – everything from buildings to tablecloths, gardening, and being active outdoors. As recent as a year ago Verna enjoyed mowing her son’s yard on a weekly basis. Verna stayed very involved with her grandchildren’s lives and was known as Big Mamma by her great-grandchildren.
She was an active member of the Evangelical Free Church in Newfolden and loved her church family. Verna was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary where she served as an officer.
She is survived by son, David (Dianne) Myhrer, Middle River, MN; daughter-in-law, Mary Myhrer of Frazee, MN; grandchildren Troy (Stephanie) Myhrer of Thief River Falls, Amanda (Gary) Benton of Medford, MN, Laura (Chad) Donarski of Newfolden, MN; Jason Myhrer of Whittier, AK, Kristi (C.J.
