Harold “Bill” Theodore Nelson was born April 13, 1913 at Clear Lake, MN, the son of Nels Peter and Karen (Kilgard) Nelsen. He attended school at Nebish, MN. As a young man he worked in Alaska.
Bill met the love of his life, his sweetheart, Harriet Knutson, and the two were married March 24, 1940 at the Knutson family farm. They were married 66 years. He farmed in Spruce Grove Township for approximately 40 years and also did some logging. He served on the Spruce Grove Township Board for many years. During this time, while he was younger, he played baseball, which he loved and that love carried through ‘til his death. He especially enjoyed the Minnesota Twins.
Fishing was a sport Bill enjoyed very much and he also enjoyed eating the results of their catch. Fish stories and other stories were abundant wherever he was. Bill enlightened many a heart with his stories and presence. As a young man, and throughout his life, Bill enjoyed hunting. During deer hunting season, Harriet and Bill hosted numerous hunters from various parts of Minnesota. Many huge meals went through their kitchen.
He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and Lion’s Club in Grygla and the Eagle’s Club in Thief River Falls.
Bill’s love of children was very evident and many children benefited from their association. He was a very special “Uncle” to all his nieces and nephews. He courageously fought health issues for a number of years and always was very thankful for the care he received, especially from the best caregiver of all, his wife, Harriet.
Harold is survived by wife, Harriet, Grygla, MN; numerous nieces and nephew and their families; sisters-in-law, Helen Reise, Bemidji, MN, Hattie Nelsen, Seattle, WA and Helen Knutson, Grygla, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents and several brothers and sisters.
