Nelson, Clara Margaret (Englund) (1909-1998)

Clara M. Nelson, 88, died Wednesday, June 17, 1998 at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 20 at Hegland Free Lutheran Church in Karlstad with Reverend Philip Rokke officiating. Debbie Boen was the organist, and vocal music was provided by Kathy and Everett Englund, Elizabeth Englund and Stephanie Pettis. Casketbearers were grandsons, Michael Lefrooth, Lowell Lefrooth, Loyal Lefrooth, Luke Simonson, Vance Lefrooth Jr., Kenneth Kostrzewski and Bradley Kostrzewski. Interment was in Salem Church Cemetery at Stephen. Arrangements were with the Collins Funeral Home of Karlstad.

Clara Margaret Englund was born on October 9, 1909 near Karlstad, the daughter of Nels Andrew and Selma (Wicklund) Englund. She attended school and grew to womanhood near Karlstad and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

On April 6, 1929 Clara was united in marriage to Elvin Sjoblom at Warren. The couple lived and farmed near Stephen. After Elvin died on June 12, 1938, Clara moved her family to Karlstad.

On November 2, 1942 she married Carl Simonson at Halma. They resided in Karlstad for several years before moving to International Falls.

Clara married Peter Emanuel Nelson on May 22, 1959 at Strandquist. They made their home at Karlstad. Peter died on November 15 1971, and Clara continued to make her home in Karlstad. At the time of her death she was residing at Oakwood Homes Apartments.

She was an active member of the Hegland Free Lutheran Church. In 1984 she was selected as Kittson County’s Outstanding Senior Citizen.

Clara is survived by two daughters, A.(V.) Lefrooth of Strandquist and E.(A.) Kostrzewski of Inver Grove Heights; one son, A.(C.) Simonson of Hampton; 15 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Arnold (Marion) Englund and Einar (Lillian) Englund, both of Karlstad; Elmer (Lauris) Englund of New Brighton and Vincent of North Minneapolis; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; one son, Vernon in 1995; and two sisters in infancy.
