Elvana (Elvy) Terry was born on August 14, 1922 in Wetumka, OK, the daughter of Mason and Alie (Meadows) Terry. She lived in a number of towns in Oklahoma and Arkansas as a child, moving between Fort Douglas, Scraper and Westville. Following the deaths of her mother and later her father, she grew to adulthood with her aunt and uncle, Cap and Oma Terry. During this time Elvy was baptized into the Christian faith. Like so many other Oklahoma families, the Terrys moved to California during the depression years. Elvy graduated from high school in Ramona, and following graduation worked as a waitress at the ‘Snack Shack’ in Long Beach, CA.
On June 9, 1946 Elvy married Walter Nelson at Grygla, MN. They made their home in Grygla and farmed in partnership with Walter’s brother Herschel. Elvy continued to live on the family farm after Walter’s death in 1994 until 2000, when she moved to Thief River Falls. Elvy was active in Grace Lutheran Church, teaching Sunday school, going to Ladies Aid, serving with the “circle” and was a member of the Homemaker’s Club. She was devoted to caring for her family: baking, cooking, canning, sewing, attending church and school functions, and doing whatever extra was needed for operation of the farm. Although not of Norwegian ancestry, she learned to make milk mush, potato dumplings, lefse, and even lutefisk. She was a devoted grandmother. She will always be remembered for her cinnamon rolls and the beautiful quilts she made.
Elvy is survived by four children, sons Wayne (special friend Mari Lou Anderson) of Grygla, MN, Steven (Ann) of Port Charlotte, FL, daughters Barbara Nelson of St. Paul, MN and Susan (Marc) Halverson of Thief River Falls, MN; four grandchildren: Keith and Kevin Nelson and David and Jennifer Halverson; one sister, Dorotha Nunn; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; daughter-in-law, Paulette and nine brothers and sisters.
