Gerinda “Gerry” Nelson, 95, died Friday, May 8, 2009 at Oakland Park Communities in Thief River Falls, MN.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Holt, MN with Rev. John Golv officiating. Burial will follow at Holt Cemetery, Holt, MN.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm until 8:00 PM with a 7:00 PM prayer service on Monday, May 11, 2009 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN. Visitation will also be held from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM on Tuesday at the church.
Gerinda Agda Monson was born on July 30, 1913 in Silverton Township, Pennington County, MN the oldest of three children born to Ludvig and Christine (Reierson) Monson. She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith and attended school in Holt. Gerry finished her final year of high school in Crookston, MN.
On March 30, 1933 she was united in marriage to Johnnie Nelson in Holt, MN and the couple made their home on the Norbeck farm in Mud Lake. In 1937 they purchased the McMurray farm in East Valley Township, Marshall County, MN near the refuge where they continued to live their married life. The farmed small grains, milked cows, and had wonderful flower and vegetable gardens. She helped area farmers pick potatoes for several harvests and was employed at the Turkey Plant in Thief River Falls.
Johnnie died on July 5, 1979. Gerry continued to live on the farm until she married Kenneth O. Nelson on October 20, 1984 at Holt, MN and they made their home in Thief River Falls. They enjoyed 15 years together and Kenneth died on September 11, 1999. She continued to live at the home on N. Maple in Thief River Falls until moving to Greenleaf Assisted Living in 2006 and moved to Oakland Park Communities in 2009.
Gerry enjoyed gardening, flowers, fishing, dancing, reading, embroidering, cooking, baking, collecting everything, and especially loved visiting and spending time with her family, friends and neighbors.
She was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church of Holt, MN, Esther Circle; she taught Sunday School, was a Holt 4-H leader, belonged to the Sons of Norway, Ringbo Homemakers, Travel Club, and Garden Club.
Survivors include nieces and nephews, Jay (Carol) Garthus, Kenny Garthus, Dorothy Engen, Larry (Shirley) Inman, Richard Inman, Dave (Peggy) Inman, Christie (Stuart) Anton, Lana Inman, Joy Inman; many great nieces and nephews including Jody (Don) Lunke, Leone (Mike) Johnson and Miles (Val) Garthus; step-children, Marie (Lloyd) Bakke, Jim (Edna) Nelson, Darrel Nelson and Brian (Wanda) Nelson and their families; she is also survived by many other relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by husbands, Johnnie and Kenneth; parents; sisters, Helen Garthus and Lida Inman; and a brother, Edward Monson in infancy.
