Nelson, Kenneth Sidney “Ken” (1916-2006)

Kenneth Nelson, 89, Warren, MN, passed away in his sleep at 6:45 AM on Tuesday, April 4, 2006 in a Hospice Center in Phoenix, AZ.

Ken was born June 4, 1916 in Bagley, MN, the ninth of ten children to Nels O. and Suzanne Nelson. He graduated from Bagley High School and attended the University of Minnesota. On June 30, 1941, Ken married Harriett “Hap” Nelson from Fosston, MN. Shortly after his marriage, he enlisted in the Marines and saw combat in the Pacific. Not many know that Ken was number one in his class of Marines for Officers Training at Quantico, VA. He was awarded the Silver Star Medal for his courage and initiative to thwart a counter attack during the Battle of Iwo Jima. During that battle, Ken was given a battlefield promotion to the rank of Captain. He was also give the Purple Heart for wounds suffered in battle. After his discharge, Ken and Hap moved to Grand Forks, ND where Ken began his career in the insurance business. In 1950, they moved to Warren when Ken purchased the Shorty Holbrook Agency in the old Warren National Bank building. He served the community for thirty-one years before retiring in 1981. Harriet died on April 19, 1986.

He was an active member of the Warren Chamber of Commerce, Marshall County Fair Board, Warren Hospital Board and the Warren Riverside Golf Club. He was especially involved in promoting and improving Warren. The building of the Warren Swimming Pool was a success he shared with others. He spearheaded the “save the courthouse drive” and was honored with the “Builder of Warren” award.

Ken was an active sports enthusiast and was especially fond of golfing, bowling, hunting and fishing. He was known to wear out all but the heartiest of fishermen as he would never quit until they met their goal for that day. Golf was always a challenge and he always was trying to “find the secret”. Finally at the age of 87 he had a hole in one after one of those “perfect” shots.

Hap and Ken had three children; Steve, Mary and John.

Ken is survived by his brother, Maurice of Fort Collins, CO, two sons; Steve (Barb Hamness) of Phoenix, AZ and John of Warren, MN, three grandsons; Mark of Reno, NV, Brian (Renee Longstreet) of Moore SC and Nathan of Phoenix, AZ, two great-grandchildren; Faith Madison and Ty Kenneth (his namesake) of Moore SC and special friend, Fern Gilbert of Warren, MN.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Harriett, daughter, Mary, parents, two brothers and six sisters.
