Norman Edward Nelson, 83, of Oslo, MN passed away on January 19, 2013 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer under the care of his family & hospice.
Norman Edward Nelson, son of Hjalmer and Evelyn (Haugen) Nelson was born in rural Oslo, MN on December 31, 1929. He was raised and attended grade school in Oak Park Township and graduated from Oslo High School in 1948, where he was active in basketball and baseball. He married RaeAnn Olson in East Grand Forks, MN on December 30, 1954. He served in the 3rd Armored Division of the U.S. Army from 1954-1956 being stationed and living in Fort Knox, KY and Ft. Benning, Columbus, GA. After his military service, they returned to the Oslo area to live and farm until his retirement. Norman was active in the Oslo community, where he was a lifelong member of and served as a post commander of the American Legion Post 331. He was also a past City Council member and a school bus driver for 35 years. Norman was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Oslo.
Left to mourn his passing and celebrate his life is his wife of 58 years, RaeAnn, of Oslo, MN and their children: Jim (Genevee) Nelson, of Oslo, MN, Steve (Kelly Straub) Nelson, and Connie (Jim) Strand both of Grand Forks; seven grandchildren: Brian (Katie) Nelson, David (Jennifer) Nelson, Michelle (Christopher) Spicer, Laura Nelson, Annika & Elli Strand, Grace Nelson Straub; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Ina Mae Johnson of Detroit Lakes, MN and Marion Swenson of Fargo, ND as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Donald, and two brothers-in-law, Russ Johnson and Paul Swenson.
