Richard “Rick” Nelson, 62, died Friday, January, 22, 2010 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND.
Funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at Zion Lutheran Church, Thief River Falls, MN with Reverend Ale Tulu officiating. Burial will be at Silver Creek Cemetery, Thief River Falls.
Visitation will be 5-8 PM, Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at Johnson Funeral service, Thief River Falls with a 7 PM prayer service and also for one hour prior to the service at the church, Wednesday.
Richard Wallace Nelson was born April 8, 1947 to Seymore and Ethel (Kappedal) Nelson in Thief River Falls, MN. He was baptized and confirmed at Silver Creek Lutheran Church. He attended school at Washington Elementary and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1965.
He was united in marriage to Kathryn (Kathy) Irene Lafrenz on November 6, 1965 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls. They lived in Thief River Falls and worked at the Creamery.
Rick then entered the US Army in March of 1966. Following basic training at Fort Leonardwood, MO he and Kathy moved to San Antonio, TX where he received his training as a dental lab technician. Following schooling he was stationed in St. Louis, MO in October of 1966. They also were in Munich, Augsburg, and Nurnberg, Germany. They lived in Copperas Cove, TX for 4½ years. He was discharged in December of 1975 with the rank of staff sergeant.
After his military service Rick and his family lived in Rochester for a little over a year. They moved back to Thief River Falls in 1976. He then opened Nelson Dental Lab in the basement of his home. In April of 1977, he moved the practice to LaBree Plaza; in 1999 he purchased the building. He owned a music store in the Falls Mall called Sound Level for a few years in the early 1980’s. Rick was an avid horseman. He raised, raced, and showed horses for quite a few years. His boys were raised not to be afraid to get their hands dirty by their father. He loved to watch the kids at their sporting events when they were growing up. Rick liked to work in the yard, planting trees, and growing a garden. Family was his top priority and Rick’s special time came spending with his grandchildren. Rick had the gift of gab and never turned down a good conversation. Often seen going to work early, so he could get some work done before people stopped by to visit. He played softball on the Honker’s team. He also bowled for many years.
Rick was a trustee at Silver Creek Lutheran Church, and a member of the follow clubs: MN Dental Lab Association, Lions Club, American Legion, American Quarter Horse Association, and the TRF Saddle Club.
He is survived by his wife Kathy, Thief River Falls, MN, 2 sons: Kevin Nelson, Thief River Falls, MN, Chris (Lori) Nelson, Red Lake Falls, MN, 5 grandchildren: Jenna, Joyia, Kyle, Savanna, and Shandi, 1 brother Howard (Margie) Nelson, Thief River Falls, MN, 3 sisters: Gloria Cleven, Grygla, MN, Beverly (Robert) Pietrowski, Shakopee, MN, Elaine Lee, Thief River Falls, MN, aunt Jean Nelson, Thief River Falls, MN, and other aunts and uncles. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers Glen and Vernon, 1 sister Shirley Hagrenes.
