Gordon (Gordy) C. Olson, beloved husband, father and grandfather, became an “Angel in the Outfield” for God’s team when he passed away at Alrtu Hospital in Grand Forks, ND, Wednesday, August 09, 2006.
Gordy was born July, 26 1927 in Strandquist, MN to Swan and Gerda Olson. He was raised in Strandquist and graduated from High School in 1945. He enlisted in the US Navy and served on the USS-Thurston, a troop transport ship stationed in the Pacific theatre at the end of WWII.
Following his naval service, Gordy returned to northern Minnesota. He eventually found his life long love in Warren and married Jeanne M. Fertig on November 27, 1953 in Hallock, MN. Gordy and Jeanne eventually settled in Warren and were blessed with four sons. Gordy enjoyed 33-years of service for Contel (Continental) Telephone as a lineman and phone installation technician.
A baseball enthusiast, Gordy played on many area amateur baseball teams in the late 1940’s and 1950’s. When he wasn’t playing baseball he served as an umpire for hundreds of local American Legion and Little League baseball games as well as local softball games. Gordy was a faithful Minnesota sports fanatic; he especially enjoyed the Twins, Vikings and Gophers.
Gordy loved the Warren community and was an active participant and volunteer in many civic organizations and activities. An avid golfer, Gordy was a long-time member of the Warren Riverside Country Club and thoroughly enjoyed Wednesday night league play. Gordy was proud of his 60-year membership record with the Warren American Legion Post 51 and served several years on the Legion Honor Guard. Gordy was a fan of Warren High School athletics and a long time supporter of the Pony Boosters Club. Rarely missing a home game in any sport, Gordy was a constant on football sidelines as a “chain-gang” volunteer for more than fifty years. He remained active in retirement as a volunteer driver for the Warren Senior Meals and was always around to help on any American Legion or Church sponsored events. Gordy and his wife Jeanne were recognized as the Outstanding Seniors in 2005, and represented Marshall County at the Minnesota State Fair August, 2005.
Gordy is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jeanne; three sons and four daughters-in-law; Steve and Debbie Olson, St. Louis Park, MN; Jeff Olson and Tamara Ibach, Bismarck, ND; and Dennis and Sherry Olson, Moorhead, MN, and Charlotte Olson, Cassville, MO. Gordy was blessed with nine grandsons, Scott and Brad Olson, St Louis Park, MN; Brandon Olson, Minneapolis, MN; Darron and Jakob Olson, Bismarck, ND; Kyle, Ryan, and Ethan Olson, Moorhead, MN; and Cody Olson, Cassville, MO; and he was extremely happy to have been blessed with one grand daughter, Madalyn Jo Olson, Bismarck, ND. He also survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Rudy and Gertrude Olson, Moorhead, MN; and one sister-in-law, Diane Olson, Waukegan, IL.
Gordy was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Ethel, his brothers Elmer and Wallace, and his eldest son Bruce.
