Joan A. Peterson, 66, of Middle River, died Sunday, May 13, 2007, at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, N.D. Funeral services were held on Thursday, May 17 at the First Lutheran Church in Middle River. Casket bearers included Mike Doyle, Ben Owen, Matt Bradley, Randy Cwikla, Mike Peterson and Dean Peterson. Interment was held at Holt Cemetery in Holt.
Joan Arlene Peterson, the daughter of the late John and Orlene (Hagglund) Reed, was born on March 18, 1941, in Thief River Falls. She attended school and grew to womanhood in the Holt community, and attended Newfolden High School.
Joan was baptized and confirmed in the Nazareth Lutheran Church in Holt. On January 28, 1959, Joan was united in marriage to Harold Peterson in Holt. The couple resided in Oregon, then in Minneapolis for a short time prior to moving to Middle River, where she had since resided. She was a member of First Lutheran Church of Middle River and was active in the Middle River Senior Citizens Group. She also volunteered for various activities at the Middle River School.
In the late ’70s, the couple owned and operated the former Chuck Wagon Café in Middle River and dairy farmed from 1971 until 1982. Joan was employed for 15 years at Arctic Enterprises in Thief River Falls until her health failed. She cared for and loved many neighborhood children over the years.
She is survived by three sons, Mark (Marlene), Scott (Therese), and Brian (Connie), all of Middle River; two daughters, Patty Peterson, also of Middle River and Kim (Jason) Howell and West Yellowstone, Mont.; nine grandchildren; three sisters, Ruth (Jerry) Owen of Thief River Falls; Diane (Mike) Poole of Hackensack; and Carol (Joe) Velasquez of Brooklyn Park.; one brother, Grant Reed of Thief River Falls; one grandson-in-law; in addition to many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Jackie Malone; and one niece, Alison Petrich.
