Betty Elaine Waagedahl was born on October 30, 1931 in Thief River Falls, Pennington County, Minnesota, to Ferne Davis and Elling O. Waagedahl. Her mother died 12 days after her birth, so Betty was raised by her maternal grandparents, T.R. and Mary A. Davis, and her aunt Leona Davis, on their farm in rural Marshall County. Her aunt Leona died when she was 9 years old. When T.R. retired, they moved into Viking. Betty was confirmed in the Mission Covenant Church in Viking in 1945, at age 13. She graduated from Newfolden High School in 1948, and then attended Northwestern Bible School in Minneapolis, Minnesota for three and a half years, until she returned home to care for her ailing grandparents. She also worked in Warren at the creamery.
Betty married Maynard Curtis Ranum on February 13, 1954 in the Viking Covenant Church. They lived in various places in North Dakota while Maynard worked on road construction, then moved to Winthrop, Minnesota. They moved back to Viking for a few years in the early 1960’s where Maynard ran the gas station. They later moved to Apple Velley, Farmington, Webster, New Prague, and then Burnsville where Maynard owned automotive repair shops and he and Betty raised their 6 children. Betty also worked at the laundromat/drycleaners in Prior Lake when the youngest boys were in high school. Betty and Maynard moved back to Viking in 1991 after Maynard retired, where Betty worked at the Viking Elementary School and the Viking Community Center. She was active in her church, the Viking Covenant Church, very involved in the Covenant Women’s group, and in Christian Women’s Club in Thief River Falls. She loved embroidery and quilting, especially making beautifully embroidered dishtowels for family and friends.
Betty is survived by her children: Terry (Monika) Ranum of Killeen, TX; Lori Ranum of Viking, MN; Philip Ranum of Buffalo Lake, MN; Wayne (Elizabeth) Saewyc of Vancouver, Canada; Mark Ranum of Minneapolis, MN; and Kevin (Kim) Ranum of Central Lake, MI; as well as 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, and many relatives and friends.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband in 2001, by her parents and grandparents, by her aunt Leona in 1940, and by a brother in infancy in 1930.
