Wallace “Snark” Rasmussen, 85, of Stephen, Minn. was born into this life March 30, 1921 and entered eternal life on March 29, 2007 at the Kittson Memorial Healthcare Center in Hallock.
Wallace was born at Strandquist to William and Frida (Johnson) Rasmussen. His family moved from a farm near Strandquist to Stephen when he was two years old.
Wallace was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and graduated from Stephen High School in 1940. While in high school, he was a star basketball player and a played game with the Harlem Globtrotters. Wallace also played with the school band and performed for President Roosevelt and the King and Queen of England.
He served with the U.S. Army in the European Theater during WWII. On June 5, 1949 he married Dale Carlson at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hallock. Wallace and his brother, Wilmer, started “Snark’s” Shop and sold paint and plumbing supplies in Stephen. He later owned and operated Rasmussen Plumbing and Heating in Stephen for 28 years and received a certificate of excellence from the Lennox Company. He was a master plumber and licensed boiler inspector. Wallace also worked four years for the city of Stephen before retiring because of failing health.
He was a member of First Lutheran Church; served as a volunteer fireman for 20 years and was a 60 year member of the Stephen American Legion.
Family members include his wife, Dale; daughters, Mary (Allan) Nelson, Fort Collins, CO and Lori (Keith) Johnson, Hendersonville, NC; six grandchildren, Kari (Jose Luis) Torres, Stephen (Rachel) Nelson, David Nelson, Kelly Marie Nelson, Ramon Johnson and Kaj Johnson; five great grandchildren, Kiley, Nathan, and Sarah Torres, Caleb and Gavin Nelson; a nephew, Bill (Mary Ann) Homewood, Surprise, AZ; as well as other nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Evelyn Homewood and a brother, Wilmer.
