Chris passed away June 10, 2008 in Grand Forks, ND from cancer. He passed peacefully surrounded by his friends, family and his high school sweetheart and love of his life, fiancée, Laura Sedlacek, holding his hand which was a common sight while he battled this horrible disease for two years.
He was born on Dec. 13, 1984 in Williston, ND, son of Michael “Mick” Jens and Janelle “Jan” Sue (Carik) Riopelle. Moved with his family to Devils Lake, ND in 1986 and to Warren in 1996. He graduated from Warren/Alvarado/Oslo High School in 2003. Went off to further his education at Bemidji State University and play football for the Beavers.
Chris was a highly honored high school athlete, respected by his coaches and teammates as well as his opponents. He played the game right, worked hard and gave 110% effort in whatever sport he played and that’s the way he lived his short life.
He loved to hunt and fish. Chris was the ultimate host whether at the family lake cabin on Lake of the Woods in Ontario, Canada or his trailer house in Bemidji. He was an excellent cook, learning much of it from his mom, spending countless hours in her kitchen “helping”. His specialty was breakfast and venison. Chris’s “little slice of heaven” was the cabin in Ontario. He learned to love and respect the lake from his dad.
Chris never had a bad day through his illness. He was an inspiration to whoever treated him. His smile was infectious. When they would ask, “How are you?” his answer was always “not too bad”. Christopher lived life to the fullest, worked hard, played hard, was true to his Laura and straight to his friends. He loved to party and usually was the last dog hung!!
He was the best “Big Brother” to sister Lacey and brother Zachary. Chris taught them to drive a straight stick, shoot a gun and reminded them that sometimes you just have to pull your pants down and slide on the ice.
Loving family members include his parents, Mick and Jan Riopelle of Warren, MN, sister, Lacey and brother, Zachary, both at home, fiancée, Laura Sedlacek of Grand Forks, ND, grandparents, Leonard and DeLone Riopelle of Warren, MN and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, John and Aldys Carik and uncle, Keith Filipi.
