Leonard Riopelle, 88, of Warren, MN, passed away Friday morning, November 28, 2014 at the North Valley Health Center in Warren.
Leonard Leroy “Kinsey” Riopelle was born on January 23, 1926 in Argyle, Minnesota. He was the son of Armand “Budeau” and Marie (Landreville) Riopelle.
He was educated in Argyle until the 9th grade and served in the US Army during WWII from 1944 through 1946 in the Philippines and Japan. He was sent into Hiroshima on clean up detail 30 days after they dropped the atomic bomb to end the War. After his honorable discharge he returned to Argyle.
On September 27, 1947 he was married to DeLone Sorenson in Warren where they were lifelong residents. From this union, they had six children; Jerry of Hillsboro, ND, Suzanne (Richard) Larson of Virginia Beach, VA, Glen “Buck” (Gloria) of Fargo, ND, Cindy Filipi of Bemidji, MN, Mick (Jan) of Warren, MN, and Todd (Trisha) of Fountain Hills, AZ.
He worked at several different businesses in Warren and also kept many side jobs to provide for his family. He drove sugar beet truck for the same farmers for 33 years. He was a Beta Sugar Beet sales representative for over 20 years retiring in 1992. After retiring, he worked for local farmers during the busy season.
He was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church and the American Legion in Warren. He served on the Warren Volunteer Fire Department for 28 years as a captain and assistant chief. He also served on the Warren Housing Authority for several years.
Through his life he enjoyed bowling, golfing, listening to jazz music, and sitting outside feeding the birds. Many memories were made following his grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their various activities. He served as the senior member of the Mick’s Bar and Grill 9:00 coffee crew.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, six children, grandchildren; Nicole (Jonathon) Paxson of Viginia Beach, VA, Kirk (Kelly) Larson of Indianapolis, IN, Tricia Filipi of St. Paul, MN, Shawna (Matt) Gjovik of Bemidji, MN, Lacey Riopelle of Grand Rapids, MN, and Zach Riopelle of Fargo, ND, step-grandchildren; Adam (Libbey) Anderson of Fort Collins, CO, Travis (Susan) Anderson of West Fargo, ND, Jamie (Mathias) Klaphake of Minnetonka, MN and Katie (Tim) Kelly of Houston, TX, great-grandchildren; Hunter Larson, Reid and Paige Paxson and Dalton and Saige Gjovik, and step-great-grandchildren; Payton and Lauren Anderson and Maddee Klaphake.
Preceded in death by his parents, brother Miles (Pitt) Riopelle, sister Mae Myrfield, son-in-law Keith Filipi, grandson Chris Riopelle, infant sister, and son Tommy.
