Karen Skadsem, 68, of Strandquist, died Saturday, March 30, 2013 at her home. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 4 at 10:30 a.m. at Bethesda Lutheran Church, Strandquist. Interment will follow at Opdahl Cemetery, rural Newfolden. Private and public family visitations were held Wednesday, April 3, at Johnson Funeral Service, Thief River Falls, and for one hour prior to the funeral service at the church on Thursday.
Karen Elizabeth Hendrickson was born in Strandquist on June 4, 1944, the daughter of Elmer and Arlene (Wayne) Hendrickson. She grew up in Strandquist and attended school there. Following high school, Karen and her husband, Dennis Skadsem lived in Newfolden, before moving to Buffalo, Wyo. In 1972, Karen and her family moved back to the Newfolden area. In 1985, Karen was united in marriage to Willis Skadsem. The couple spent a lot of time traveling for Willis’s work. They retired close to the same time and lived in Strandquist.
In her younger years, Karen worked as a waitress at the Busy Bee Café in Buffalo, Wyo., and the Newfolden Café. She was employed by Northwest Community Action, Artic Cat in the sewing department and for the Digi-Key Corportation in Thief River Falls. Karen’s family always came first in her life. Some of her interests included sewing, bingo, playing cards with family, and traveling.
Karen is survived by her children, Brian (Tami) Skadsem of Chisholm, and Jason Skadsem of Newfolden; stepchildren, LuJean Newell of Lengby, Lorna (Scott) Cantrall, Williston, N.D., and Lonnie (Autum) Skadsem of Newfolden; daughter-in-law, Rhonda Skadsem of Newfolden; grandchildren, Corey, Craig, and Jake Skadsem, Zachery Lavinder, Tara and Cole Skadsem, and Savannah Skadsem; step-grandchildren, Nick, Jay, and Kaitlyn Maurstad, Andrea (Nick Jorstad) Maki, Evan Maki, and Hunter, Hallie, Ashley and Keira Skadsem; great-grandchildren, Gage, Kylee and Kayci, Kaycee and Karlee; brothers, John, Larry, and Donovan Hendrickson; uncle, Art (Sharon) Wayne; cousin, Ervin Hendrickson; mother-in-law, Lucile Skadsem, and many other relatives and friends.
Preceding her in death is her father and mother; husband, Willis; son, Charles, and her sister, Lois Hendrickson.
