Randy Skadsem, 51, died Tuesday, April 17, 2007 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, April 22, 2007 at Evangelical Free Church in Newfolden, MN with Pastor Roger Schmitz officiating. Burial will follow at Opdahl Cemetery, New Maine Township, Marshall County, MN.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM with a 7:00 PM Prayer Service on Saturday, April 21, 2007 at the chapel of Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
Randy Wayne Skadsem was born March 23, 1956 in Grafton, ND the son of Orville and Marion (Sorenson) Skadsem. The family moved to Thief River Falls, MN and then to Fosston, MN where Randy went to school and graduated from Fosston High School in 1975.
On June 8, 1975 he was united in marriage to Susan Marie Daniels at Kingo Lutheran Church in Fosston, MN. Randy entered into service with the United States Marine Corps on June 27, 1975. While stationed at Camp Lejune, North Carolina in 1976, a son, Michael David, was born. He received the rank of Corporal and was Honorably Discharged on February 1, 1977.
Following his discharge, Randy attended Staples Area Vocational School where he earned his degree in Heavy Equipment Mechanics. While in Staples in 1978, a daughter, Sheri Lynn, was born. The family moved to Fargo, ND where Randy worked for Butler Machinery and a daughter, Donna Marie, was born here into the Skadsem family in 1982.
The family moved to Volga, SD where Randy was employed by Land-O-Lakes as a mechanic and in 1983 a daughter, Sandra Kay, joined the family. Here he was a volunteer firefighter and first responder. In 1989 upon the passing of his mother, Randy moved his family to a farm near Newfolden, MN. The family’s farm was built by his grandfather, Oscar. During his childhood Randy enjoyed spending much time here with his grandparents. Since 1990, Randy has worked at Land-O-Lakes in Thief River Falls.
His passion was his family and restoring antique tractors and engines with his Dad, Orville. He has been active with Lake Itasca Region Pioneer Farmers since 1987 and all family vacations have been in Itasca during the Annual Itasca Thrashing Bee since then.
Randy was currently a member of the Eagle’s View Church in Thief River Falls. He and Susan have had a church music ministry since the mid-1980’s, where Randy played the bass guitar and Susan played piano and sang. He has been a fatherly mentor to many, was always willing to help, and was well known for his bear hugs. Randy was well known for his practical jokes, his big heart, and his many interesting stories.
Survivors include his wife, Susan of Newfolden, MN; children, Mike Skadsem of Newfolden, MN, Sheri (Brian) Schoon of Thief River Falls, MN, Donna (Matt) Rybakowski of Holt, MN, and Sandi (Dennis) Bevington of Newfolden, MN; 6 grandchildren, Cody and Alicia Skadsem, David Schoon, Faith and Hope Rybakowski, and Katie Bevington; his father, Orville (Fran) Skadsem of Thief River Falls, MN; twin brother, Ricky (Sue) Skadsem of Pelican Rapids, MN, Alora (Mike) Gaddy of Conyers, GA, Ron (Stephanie) Skadsem of Fosston, MN; he is also survived by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his mother; and one grandson, Parker Lee.
