Ella Steinhauer, 92, died Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at Thief River Care Center in Thief River Falls.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 3, at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Thief River Falls, with June Young officiating. Casket bearers included Keith Hagen, Arlen Sorum, Vincent Hagen, Hamlin Metzger, Josh Watne and Richard Anderson. Interment was held at Wildwood Cemetery in Rosewood.
Ella Elvina Rye, daughter of Henry and Julia (Olson) Rye, was born on December 3, 1915 in Goodridge on the family farm. She attended school in Adams, N.D., and Thief River Falls. At the tender age of 12, Ella had a summer job on a farm as a caretaker for an elderly woman. At the age of 14, she went to work at the courthouse in Warren, where she cared for the sheriff’s family and the inmates.
On March 17, 1934 (St. Patrick’s Day), at the age of 18, Ella, wearing a green dress, married Lloyd P. Anderson on the Rye family farm near Rosewood. To this union, there were six children born, Lois Arlene, Dorothy, Richard, Robert, Judy and Shirley. They made their home in Rosewood, until Lloyd died on October 5, 1967. Throughout these years Ella enjoyed raising their family. She also was the Rosewood seamstress, the community barber and hairdresser, was entrusted to issue drivers licenses and drivers license renewals, and wrote the Rosewood News for the Thief River Falls Times.
Ella enjoyed baking and decorating cakes for special occasions. In the late 1960s, she worked as a secretary at Arnold Realty and in 1968 bought and fixed up a home in Thief River Falls. Here she rented out rooms to college students until 1985. In the 1970s, she taught crocheting and knitting at Northland Community College in Thief River Falls and over the years taught many classes throughout northwest Minnesota.
On January 11, 1986 Ella was united in marriage to Walter Steinhauer at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Thief River Falls. The couple bought a house and through their years together enjoyed playing games, traveling, and visiting with their many family and friends. Since 2006, Ella resided at the Thief River Care Center. In 2008, Ella and Walt celebrated their 22nd anniversary.
She was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church, the Birthday Club, and was the family historian. Throughout her life, her happiest moments were spent teaching through storytelling, making crafts and finding a good bargain.
Survivors include five children, Dorothy (Larry) Schneider of Paola, Kan., Richard (Judie) Anderson of Deming, N.M., Robert Anderson of Albuquerque, N.M., Judy (Arlen) Sorum of Thief River Falls and Shirley (Keith) Hagen of Gatzke; 18 grandchildren; 22 great -grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Ralph Rye of Desota, Kan. and dear friend Elodee Johnson of Fargo, N.D. She is also survived by seven step-children, Cleo Swanson of Missoula, Mont., Harold Steinhauer of Thief River Falls, Jeanne (Doug) Grund of Baudette, Donna (Jon) Fosholm of Thief River Falls, Gladys (Tom) Ahlin of Elko, NV, Patty (Jim) Klemmetson of Thief River Falls and Bruce Steinhauer of Thief River Falls; 15 step-grandchildren; 12 step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Lloyd P. Anderson (33 years) and Walter W. Steinhauer (22 years); daughter, Lois Arlene in infancy; three brothers and four sisters.
