Tunheim, Bertha Ingeborg (Moen) (1915-2014)

Bertha Tunheim of Newfolden, MN age 99 died peacefully on Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at Thief River Care Center in Thief River Falls, MN.

Funeral Service to Celebrate the Life of Bertha Tunheim will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, October 25, 2014 at the New Hope Lutheran Church in Newfolden, MN with Pastor Ollie Urdahl officiating. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in Newfolden, MN.

Visitation will be held 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM with a 7:00 PM prayer service on Friday October 24, 2014 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to the funeral at New Hope Lutheran Church on Saturday.

Bertha Ingeborg Moen was born on March 17, 1915 in Spruce Valley Township, Marshall County, MN the daughter of Andrew and Alida (Iverson) Moen. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She attended Monroe Country School in Spruce Valley Township.

Bertha worked at various jobs in the Newfolden, MN area. On December 24, 1941, Bertha was united in marriage to Joseph Tunheim in Viking, MN. They made their home on a farm north of Newfolden in New Maine Township and to this union two children were born, Arlynn and Mona. In the fall of 1952, the family moved into Newfolden.

Bertha worked cleaning for the Newfolden School for many years and later worked at the Land-O-Lakes Turkey Plant in Thief River Falls, MN. In 1977 she started working with the meals at the Newfolden Senior Center until retiring in the late 1980’s.

She enjoyed visiting with family and friends, especially enjoyed spending her holidays with the Berggren and Lee families, gardening, baking lefse and donuts, sewing, music, and listening to Trumpet of Truth radio program on Sunday evenings.

Bertha was a member of the New Hope Lutheran Church in Newfolden, MN where she enjoyed singing with the New Hope Singers and was active in the Women’s Group. She never missed church on Sunday and also enjoyed the Bible Studies. Bertha was also a member of the Newfolden American Legion Auxiliary, a girl scout leader for many years, and was active in the Newfolden Senior Citizen group.

Survivors include her son, Arlynn (Donna) Tunheim of Newfolden, MN; son-in-law, Juan Castro of Sheffield Lake, OH; grandchildren, Kelly (Scott) Van Meter of Sheffield Lake, OH, Shawn Castro of Warren, PA, Nancy Tunheim of Newfolden, MN and Heidi Tunheim of Thief River Falls, MN; great-grandchildren, Cristina Castro, Nicholas Van Meter and Alexander Van Meter; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Bertha is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph in 1975; daughter, Mona Castro in 1977; and siblings, Knute (Mary) Moen, Inga (Clarence) Kezar, John “Henry” (Zephra) Moen, Arthur (Louise) Moen, Borghild (Elman) Rehder, Magnus “Manny” Moen.
