Wappula, Saima Aina (Karvonen) (1914-2006)

Saima Wappula, 91, died Thursday, June 8, 2006 at the Karlstad Health Care Center, Karlstad, Minnesota.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, June 13, 2006 at First Lutheran Church in Middle River, MN with Reverend Curtis Matz officiating. Burial will be at the Finnish Cemetery in Middle River.

Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Monday, June 12, 2006 at First Lutheran Church in Middle River with a 7:00 P.M. prayer service on Monday evening and at the church for one hour prior to services on Tuesday.

Saima Aina Karvonen was born a twin on October 20, 1914 at home, in Cedar Township, Marshall County, near Middle River, MN, the daughter of the late Jacob and Hannah (Hautala) Karvonen. She attended and graduated from Honor Bright School, District #64. She was baptized June 17, 1934 at home and was confirmed, as an adult, on March 22, 1959 at First Lutheran Church. She was a member of the Finnish Lutheran Church and First Lutheran Church, Holt Keenagers and Middle River Senior Citizens.

Saima was united in marriage on October 28, 1933 to John K. Wappula. The couple farmed and had dairy cattle. She worked in the potato fields, Land O’ Lakes Turkey Plant and Arctic Cat. Saima was line supervisor until she retired in 1979.

She enjoyed gardening, raising flowers, making quilts, crocheting and spending time with family. She made many quilts for First Lutheran Church. She enjoyed making many trips back to the farm, which was always home. In 2001 she moved to the Newfolden Apartments for a short time, before moving to the Royal Manor in Middle River. In March of 2005 she moved to the Karlstad Health Care Center.

Saima is survived by three children: Ernest (Virginia) Wappula, Hugo, MN, Marjorie (David) Bakke, Newfolden, MN and Melvin (Diane) Wappula, Middle River, MN; 11 grandchildren: Randy,Charlene, Robert, Susan, Laurie, Jennifer, DeAnn, Deland, Jay, Kari and Rick; 16 great grandchildren: D.J., Jamie, Cody, Nick, Lydia, Maddy, Tom, Amanda, Nicholas, Hayden, Addison, Brandon, Jordan, Kevin, Sydney and Bryton; three step grandchildren: Garret, Bobbie Jo and Matthew; six step great grandchildren: Braylie, Kirstyn, Logan, Paige, McKenna and Mason; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, March 31, 1974; one son, Arne Wappula, August 24, 2001, one brother, Toivo Karvonen in 1947; her twin sister, Selma Ness in 1993; and her older sister, Jennie Filpula, in 1997.
