Green, Duane LaVerne “Sonny” “Dewey” (1926-2009)

Duane Green, 83, of Middle River, MN, died on Saturday, March 7, 2009 at Valley Elder Care in Grand Forks, ND.

Duane LaVerne Green was born on February 25, 1926 to Donald Elmer and Minnie Lee (Offerdahl) Green in Middle River, MN. He grew up in Middle River and attended school in town. He often told about carrying water to the folks in town.

At a young age he went surveying around the state of North Dakota. Then at age 20 he entered the US Army. He served his country for two years.

He was united in marriage to Patricia Killie and to this union three children were born. They lived in Grand Forks for a few years. Duane worked for the pipeline during this time. His first wife Patricia died in the early 1950’s.

He was united in marriage to Yvonne Johnson on May 29, 1956 at Cass Lake, MN. The couple lived in Thief River Falls for the first 20 years of their marriage. They then made home near Middle River and Holt, MN. Duane drove truck for LB Hartz delivering goods to the towns in NW Minnesota for many years.

Duane was an avid hunter and he liked archery. He enjoyed his hunting shack near Grygla where he spent time hunting and socializing. He also spent a lot of time fishing at Springsteel Resort. He helped start the Thief River Archery Club. He enjoyed reading. He had a hobby farm and liked having different animals around and had a fondness for pigs. He was a member of the Middle River American Legion. He was also a member of the Eagles in Thief River Falls. To his family he was known as “Sonny” and to his friends he was “Dewey.”

He is survived by his children from his first marriage, SanDee Green Burley Frye, Tucson, AZ, Roxann (Robert) Jarvinen, Britt, MN, Stephen Burley, Bellingham, WA, four children from his second marriage, Rudy (Pam) Green, Bloomington, MN, Dawn Gilmore, Isanti, MN, Darrin Green, Grand Forks, Corey Green, Jacksonville, FL, grandchildren Andy Nygaard, Luke Nygaard, Sean Ryan, Hjalmaar Rose, Nathan Rose, Matthew Rose, Collin Rose, Brittany Green, and Lexie Norby, brothers and sisters Douglas Green, Kenowick, WA, Beverly (Leland) Evjen, Williston, ND, Marilyn (Phil) Yale, Manvel, ND, Donnie (CeCe) Green, Merril Beach, FL, Janice Rolph, Minneapolis, KS, Myrna (Don) Topolinski, Watoma, WI, Judy (Keith) Hawkins, Great Falls, MT, Terri (Dan) O’Grady, Pittsburg, PA, Penny (John) Mechia, Grand Forks, ND. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Patricia, second wife Yvonne in 2001, son Brady Lee Green, two sisters Jackie Johnson and Shirley Tingem, his parents, step father, Cliff Lee.

Green, Yvonne Aileen (Johnson) (1930-2001)

Yvonne Green, 71, died Saturday, September 8, 2001 at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 10, at Nazareth Lutheran Churchin Holt with Rev. Irvin Schmidke officiating. Yvonne Larson was the organist and the soloist was Bob Skoglund. Casketbearers were Gordon Dunham, Clifford Larson, Arvid Matero, Daryl Johnson, David Johnson and Larry Hagen. Interment was in Ringbo Cemetery with Green Funeral Home of Thief River Falls in charge of the arrangements.

Yvonne Aileen Johnson was born on February 3, 1930 in Holt, the daughter of Hjalmer and Emma (Stokke) Johnson. She was confirmed in Holt and attended school in Newfolden, graduating in 1947.

On May 29, 1956, she was united in marriage to Duane LaVerne Green at Cass Lake, The couple has made their home near Middle River and Holt. Yvonne worked at Sears, Gambles and Digi-Key.

She served as Holt Township clerk and church janitor and belonged to a homemakers club, ladies aid, Aid Association for Lutherans and the Middle River American Legion Auxiliary.

Yvonne enjoyed driving Jeremiah to work, quilting, flowers and gardening.

Survivors include her husband, Duane of Middle River; a daughter, Dawn (John) Gilmore of Ramsey; three sons, Rudy (Pam) Rose of Bloomington, Darrin Green of Grand Forks, N.D. and Corey Green of Jacksonvile, Fla.; two step-daughters, Roxann (Robert) Jarvinen of Britt and Sandee Green-Burley-Frye of Tucson, Ariz.; a stepson, Stephen Burley of Bellingham, Wash.; nine grandchildren; and a sister, Ethel Hyatt of Thief River Falls.

Yvonne was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Brady Lee Green; two sisters, Eloise Gilbert and Eunice Hagen; and a brother, Francis Johnson.

Obituary of Mrs. Lewis Johnson

Anna Johnson was born Jan. 3,
1850, in Sweden, and was married
in her native country in the spring
of 1881 to Lewis J. Johnson. The
next year Mr. Johnson emigrated to
America, Mrs. Johnson remaining in
Sweden for nine years after her
husbands[sic] departure. Their first
home in this country was at Lock-
port, Ill., where they lived until
five years ago, when they moved to this
vicinity.

Death came to the family Tuesday
night July 25th when the wife and
mother departed this life after about
a year of sickness.

Four children were born to this
union, one a son who died in Ill.
at the age of 13 years and was
buried there, another son lives in
Joliet, Ill., one daughter Mrs. Aug-
usta Swanson lives near Newfolden
and the younger daughter Miss So-
phia lives at home with her father
and aged grandmother.

The funeral was held Friday after-
noon at the Ringbo church, Rev.
Breederson officiating, and interment
was made in the cemetery there.

Mrs. Johnson was universally lov-
ed and respected for her womanly
qualities and will not only be missed
by relatives but by a large circle of
friends.
